Logan Peterson (#61) makes the tackle for the Rebels against Mesabi East

In the second round of the Section 7AA playoffs the #1 seed MLWR Rebels coming off a first round bye took on the #5 seed Mesabi East Giants who beat Barnum in the first round. The Rebels came to play and Mesabi looked lost trying to find some way to stop the Rebels.

The Giants kicked off and the Rebels started the game at the 35 yard line. After a couple incomplete passes the Giants forced them to punt and Mesabi got into their first offensive drive. They looked like they were getting something going driving all the way down the field with a couple nice passes and runs but were eventually stopped at the Rebel 18 yard line. MLWR got the ball and were ready to get on the scoreboard. A couple Mesabi penalties and 1st down runs by Trent Juhl helped the Rebels get to the 50 yard line. Then QB Mason Olson hit fellow sophomore Brady Watrin for a beautiful 25 yard downfield pass. Blake Juhl then picked up another first to end the quarter at the Mesabi 13 yard line.

The 2nd quarter began and soon enough Brady Watrin jumped up to catch a lob from Mason Olson in the back of the end zone for a 13 yard score. The two point conversion attempt failed for a score of 6-0 with 11:56 left in the half. The Rebels kicked off and quickly stopped Mesabi East forcing a punt. Jeremiah Weidendorf received the punt but fumbled after getting to the Giants 30 yard line. Logan Privette quickly got on it and the Rebels kept the ball. Anakin Oswald picked up a first down and then Trent Juhl had a touchdown run called back to make it first and 20 at the Mesabi 29 yard line. Trent Juhl ran it again for a 25 yard gain and then a 5 yard touchdown to finish out the drive. The two point conversion failed again making it 12-0 Rebels.

Mesabi got the kickoff but then Rebel Freshman Logan Orvedahl quickly got it back with an interception and return to the Mesabi 15. Mason Olson then threw a pick in the end zone and Mesabi got the ball right back. The Rebels then got the ball back again after forcing a turnover on downs with 3 minutes left in the half. Mason Olson then threw a pass to Carter Johnson and he was finally caught 70 yards downfield at the Mesabi 15. Olson then underthrew an open Brady Watrin for his second interception. However Brady Watrin got the ball back for the Rebels with the 4th interception of the game. Mason Olson then rewarded Watrin with another touchdown pass for 15 yards. Extra point was good by Carter Johnson. The Rebels then got their own kickoff after it bounced off a Mesabi player. Mason Olson then threw Carter Johnson a 40 yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds left in the half. The extra point was blocked for a halftime score of 25-0 Rebels lead.

To start the second half Mesabi got the ball and was quickly forced to punt but Rebel returner Weidendorf fumbled and the Giants recovered. The third quarter was very slow but Rebel Anakin Oswald eventually scored off a 7 yard run with 2:47 left. Extra point made for a score of 32-0. The Rebels then started to put in some younger players to close out the game.

In the fourth quarter with all freshman runningbacks Duane Broughton ran in a 6 yard score for his first varsity touchdown. Extra point was good to make it 39-0. The Rebels were hoping to keep the Giants scoreless but couldn't quite hold on with Josh Lafreneniere catching a 15 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Baribeau. Two point conversion was good for a Final Score of 39-8 Rebels Victory.

For the Rebels Trent Juhl finished the game with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown and Mason Olson was 7 for 14 with 144 yards and 3 touchdowns. Carter Johnson had 99 of those yards and one of the touchdowns and Brady Watrin had the rest with 45 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mesabi QB T. Baribeau had 145 yards and a touchdown. Leading MLWR in tackles was Trent Juhl with 6, Brady Watrin with 5, and Blake Juhl with 4. The Rebels now move on to play Royalton in the section championship a rematch of last year both teams hoping to go to State. Come support the Rebels Thursday, November 1st at 7:00 in Esko.
