Under chilly skies, with game time temps hovering around 40 degrees, the Moose Lake-Willow River football team took on the Mora Mustangs at home last Friday. The Mustangs, ranked 15th in class 3A would prove to be a formidable foe and another tough test for the Rebels. Rebel coach Dave Louzek, dressed comfortably in his signature cargo shorts, had the Rebel boys fired up for the contest.

These two teams played a very similar style of football offensively, relying on roughneck running backs churning the ball on the ground with aggression and inside misdirection plays. Mora scored first after a methodical long drive that consumed most of the first quarter after stopping the Rebels on their opening possession. Mustang senior running back Idris Anderson finished the drive with a 10 yard rushing TD and a successful two point conversion by the Mustangs put the score at 8-0 with 33 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Rebels responded with a long drive of their own on the ground marching it down the field with Trent Juhl, Blake Juhl, and Logan Peterson pounding the ball inside with nice runs behind strong blocking by the offensive line. The brothers Juhl capped the scoring drive with sophomore Blake scoring on a 15 yard TD and senior Trent powering in the two point conversion with 8:34 remaining in the second.

Mora answered on the first play of the next possession with a 65 yard TD by senior speedster Jonathan Smith. Two point conversion successful making the score 16-8 in favor of the Mustangs. MLWR took to the air on the next possession with QB Mason Olson connecting with Brady Watrin for 17 yards pushing the Rebels into Mustang territory to the 43 yard line. Trent and Blake Juhl took it down the field from there with Trent finishing with a 16 yard TD and a two point conversion tying the game at 16 with 3:25 left in the half.

Mora received the kick and quickly marched the ball down the field with several long runs and scored an apparent touchdown with 37 seconds remaining but it was called back due to a holding penalty. Facing third and 10 with 32 seconds remaining from the Rebel 21 yard line, the Mustangs dialed up some trickery with a handoff toss back to the halfback pass by Cole Steffen who tossed a 21-yard TD to Tysson Peterson. Two point conversion was successful, Mustangs led 24-16 at halftime.

The Mustangs struck quickly to start the second half with Smith ripping off a 43 yard TD on the third play of the drive pushing the score to 32-16. MLWR responded with another long scoring drive ending with Blake Juhl's second touchdown run of 24 yards making the score 32-22 with 4:34 left in the third. Mora had another long drive finished with Anderson rushing it in from nine yards out. Mora led 38-22 at the end of the third.

Mustang Smith was a nightmare for the Rebels and scored twice in the fourth on three and 78 yard TDs. Smith finished with 329 yards rushing and four TDs. Rebel Adam Olson caught a nine-yard TD in the fourth. The Rebels played well on offense but were unable to stop the juggernaut rushing attack of the Mustangs. Final score was Mustangs 51 Rebels 30.

Come out and support the Rebels at Willow River for the Homecoming game versus Crosby-Ironton this Friday at 7. Go Rebels!
