The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebel football team traveled north to the Canadian border to take on the International Falls Broncos last Friday night. Both teams started out slow on offense with neither team putting any points on the board in the first quarter. The majority of the first half was filled with penalties and slow football as both teams were struggling on offense. For the game, the Rebels were penalized 10 times for 74 yards and it seemed as though nearly every big offensive play for the Rebels was called back. Both teams also struggled on third down, with the Rebels converting on only four of 13 and the Broncos on only two of 14.

International Falls fumbled late in the second quarter and Eli Werner of the Rebels recovered setting up the Rebels first scoring drive. On third and 15, QB Mason Olson connected with sophomore Adam Olson for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining in the half. It was Adam Olson's first touchdown as a Rebel. Extra point failed and the Rebels led 6-0 at the end of the first half.

Rebel junior Eli Werner returned the opening kickoff 45 yards to start the second half. The Rebels moved the ball on the ground into Bronco territory. Facing another third and 15, Mason Olson threw to Werner for a 40-yard TD. Extra point failed. The Rebel defense held the Broncos scoreless in the third, Rebels led 12-0 after three.

Broncos QB Jace Hallin tossed a 63-yard touchdown on a tipped pass to Simon Palm with 9:50 remaining in the fourth making the score 12-7 Rebels on top. Bronco fans were pumped up sensing an upset. The Rebels responded by marching the ball down the field on the ground with Werner, Trent Juhl, and Blake Juhl all with strong runs. Blake Juhl powered in from four yards out and Trent Juhl converted the two point conversion putting the Rebels up 20-7 with 7:25 remaining.

The Rebel rush defense was exceptional allowing only 14 yards on the ground to the Broncos. Rebel defense was led by Logan Peterson with seven tackles, two assists, Logan Orvedahl with six tackles, two assists, Brady Watrin with four tackles, four assists, one sack, and Carter Klund with three tackles and four assists. Adam Olson had one interception and Werner had a fumble recovery.

On offense the Rebels had a balanced attack gaining 100 yards in the air and 163 yards on the ground. Rebels were led by Mason Olson who was 5/14 for 100 yards and two passing touchdowns, Trent Juhl with 70 yards rushing, and Blake Juhl 53 yards rushing and a touchdown. Werner had 43 yards on two catches and a TD.

The 20-7 win moved the Rebels to 2-1 on the season. Come out and support the boys this week as they play rival Esko Friday night in Esko, game time 7 p.m. Go Rebels!
