The MLWR football team notched their first win of the season beating class 3A Virginia Blue Devils 26-12 in front of a nice crowd of Rebel fans. The Rebels started the game on offense and marched the ball down the field on the ground. Eli Werner, Anakin Oswald, and Blake Juhl all had multiple carries behind some solid blocking from the offensive line moving the ball into scoring position. Juhl capped off the drive with a 16-yard scamper for an opening drive TD. Rebels failed to convert the extra point.

The Blue Devils went to the air on their first possession. Werner made them pay picking off their first pass and returned it to midfield. Rebel QB Mason Olson connected with Oswald for a 37-yard reception on the first play of the drive. Oswald then took it to the house on the next play for an 11-yard rushing touchdown. Carter Johnson kicked the extra point with a nice hold by placeholder Danny Lilya. Rebels led 13-0.

MLWR stopped Virginia and forced a punt on the next possession. The Rebels went back to the ground as Werner, Oswald and Juhl all had strong runs in the drive. Oswald scored his second touchdown of the game on a five-yard run with six seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Blue Devils. Rebels led 19-0 going into the second quarter.

The Rebels flexed their muscles on defense on the next possession putting some heat on Blue Devil senior QB Jack Zupetz. Rebel senior tackle Aidan Szczyrbak sacked Zupetz, chased him from the pocket once, and delivered a crushing hit on fourth down as he released a pass that fell incomplete. Szczyrbak, Logan Privette, and Carter Klund combined for another QB sack during which Klund's helmet came flying off. Rebels took over on downs.

Attacking through the air, Rebel QB Olson connected with fellow sophomore Brady Watrin on receptions of 27, 25, and 13 yards putting the Rebels in scoring position. Werner then powered one into the end zone for a 3 yard TD. Johnson kicked the extra point through and the Rebels led 26-0 at the end of the first half.

Virginia scored twice in the third quarter on passing plays. Zupetz to Jayden Bernard for 45 yards and Zupetz to Caleb Bialke for 26 yards to make things interesting. The Blue Devils failed on both extra point attempts with Logan Orvedahl intercepting one in the end zone. The Rebel defense had enough of that and went on a sack attack. Privette sacked Zubetz once and combined with Szczyrbak on another one. Logan Peterson looked like a lion closing in on a zebra as he had a big sack of Zubetz for a loss of 15 yards. Szczyrbak had three sacks and two assists. Peterson four tackles and four assists, Orvedahl three tackles two assists, Garrett Peterson three tackles, and Ben Dewey two tackles and three assists. The Rebel defense held Virginia scoreless in the fourth quarter. Final score Rebels 26 Blue Devils 12.

Leading the Rebels on the ground were Oswald 82 yards on 12 carries and two TDs, Juhl with 74 yards on 16 carries and one TD, and Werner with 52 yards on 16 carries and one TD. Olson was 6/9 for 122 yards passing and no interceptions. Watrin had 67 yards receiving.

The Rebels 1-1 travel to International Falls to take on the 0-2 Broncos Friday September 14 at 7 p.m. Take the day off and take in the game. Go Rebels!
