New app at Barnum will report bullying

August 30, 2018

Students at the Barnum schools will be able to anonymously report bullying on a new app, reported High School Principal Brian Kazmierczak to the Barnum School Board on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

“Students can contact us when they observe bullying or see cyber bullying on a new app called Stop It,” said Kazmierczak. “We are trying to give the students the opportunity to help in a situation. They can do it by phone. It is an app signed in to the school and the students can attach photos or videos. It comes to me.”

Kazmierczak said that the app also documents the messages. The student will be anonymous but they have the option to share who they are, he added.

Superintendent Dave Bottem said that the school was going to try it for a year.

“It’s a good preventative,” he said.

Kazmierczak also spoke about the Bomb Squad, a group of 16 students that will welcome the seventh graders to the high school. He also said that the student handbook is now available on the school’s website.

The new elementary principal, Judi Vitito, reported that she is meeting the staff and is designing and working on her leadership approach. She said that she is also learning about Title I. She said that she hadn’t had that where she was before.

Vitito said the elementary school will also be piggybacking on Stop It but it won’t be rolled out until October, Anti-Bullying Month.

Bottem reported that the summer projects are nearing completion. A new chimney was going to be built onto the high school building the following day. Repairs on the parking lot for both the high school and elementary school are being completed. The bus garage has a new roof.

In other business, the board approved the expenditure of $135,000 for the purchase, delivery and installation of new playground equipment for the Barnum Elementary School.

The next meeting is a working meeting of the board, set for Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m.
