Faye Griffin has visited the Carlton County Fair since she was five years old.

Faye Hecker Griffin was recognized at the Carlton County Fair on Friday, Aug. 17, during the Outstanding Senior Citizens program as having attended 95 Carlton County Fairs in her lifetime.

"She remembers coming to the fair when she was five," said Carlton County Commissioner Sue Zmyslony as she introduced Griffin. "The only place that Faye has been every year on the third weekend in August is the fair in Barnum."

Griffin's family members were involved in horse racing for a number of years. Horse racing remains her favorite part of the fair.

Griffin celebrated her 100th birthday on Aug. 18 at a party at the Blackhoof Community Center.

Faye Griffin was born in Blackhoof Valley Township on August 19, 1918, to William and Minnie Hecker. She attended Blackhoof Valley School and then Barnum High School, graduating in 1937.

In her working career, Faye was a waitress and a hostess in various cafes, including Hart's Old Tyme Coffee House in Moose Lake. She also worked in retail, banking, sold insurance, and she owned Faye's Gift Shoppe in Moose Lake (in the building now the office of the Star Gazette).

Griffin was one of several alumni of the Blackhoof Valley School who were instrumental in the first steps of getting the former school converted into the community center it is today.

Griffin is the mother of four, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of 10. Over the years, she has enjoyed visiting many states, including Hawaii.

She lives independently at Greysolon Plaza in Duluth, where she enjoys her view of Lake Superior and walking along the Lake Walk.

In 2015, Griffin enjoyed the honor of being a co-grand marshal of the Spring Fever Days parade in Barnum along with her good friend, Astrid Munter Johnson.
