Break-in at Banning Junction

A break-in occurred at the Banning Junction C-store early Sunday morning, July 22. The individual who broke in took an ATM containing over $5,500 in cash and damaged property in doing so.

Owners of Banning Junction, Erick and Katie Storebo, who have owned the convenience store which is attached to a diner, bar and restaurant and liquor store, for just over a year, said store security cameras showed a full size, dark-colored truck pulling into the parking lot around 3:00 a.m. Sunday.

The individual(s) accessed the roof via a ladder and turned video cameras away so as not to be filmed. The thief came in through the front door by breaking the glass with a crowbar, wrapped a log chain around the ATM and pulled it out the door. The Storebos suspect it was more than one person given the weight of the ATM.

The ATM was found in a clearing near Banning Line Road and Gale Road west of Banning Junction. Law enforcement told the Storebos the ATM appeared to be broken open with an ax.

The estimated damage to the entrance and building is approximately $13,000, said the Storebos, which includes the ATM and cash inside. The couple said they will be beefing up their security.

"I feel violated," said Erick Storebo. "It's tough living in this area with the drugs as bad as they are. Knowing that anyone out here with a rock has a key to my building is disheartening."

The Storebos had just celebrated the business' one year anniversary and said they greatly appreciated all the people who came out the night before the break-in.

The store was recently updated with new gas pumps. "We recently put a lot of money into the building and new pumps," said Katie Storebo. "We want to make things nicer for the community, so this is discouraging."

A video of the crime can be found on the Banning Junction Facebook page.
