Area youth take part in Rookie League

With many hours of volunteered time from parents, coaches and managers along with the generosity of local businesses and groups, we were very excited to be able to offer little league baseball to East Central area youth. It had been many years since our area has participated in such a program. We formed one team for beginning players, 10 and under a 'Rookie League' team, in a co-charter partnership with Moose Lake-Willow River. Twelve very dedicated players and families were able to maneuver practice and games scheduled throughout the rainy spring, playing at our home field in Finlayson, all the way up to fields near Wade Stadium in Duluth. This was the first time the players had pitched their own games and faced other youth pitchers. It was quite the challenge but so much fun to watch! The kids had a tremendous year of growth in skills, team work and sportsmanship-not to mention a whole lot of fun and friendship. Despite this being the first time any of the players had ever played in an organized travelling league, the team ended with a pretty stellar record of 5-6-2 (wins-losses-ties) and took third place in the end of the year silver bracket tournament. We are excited to have this partnership with MLWR and continue to grow the program for area youth. The hope is to offer additional teams for various age groups next year. Keep an eye out for more information in early 2019! We cannot extend enough thanks to our sponsors, coaches, parents, players, umpires (Bill Kenyon & Olivia Raivo), Kathy Gutknecht (EC community Ed), Joe Jarvis (EC athletic director), Gary Anderson & Shawn Bode (MLWR youth baseball) for making this year possible!
