Moose Lake Willow River ninth grade boys' basketball team traveled to Hibbing Sunday, April 15, to play in the Pacesetter Region 7 tournament. The other teams competing were: Duluth Marshall, Hibbing, Pillager, Red Lake, Proctor, Bigfork, Mountain Iron-Buhl, Ely, Grand Rapids, Northhome-Kelliher and International Falls. The Rebels, Grand Rapids, Red Lake and Hibbing got a bye in the first round.

MLWR played Mountain Iron-Buhl in their first contest. The Rebels were on fire, leading at half-time 39-16. In one of their offensive series, they got the offensive rebound four times to finally score. Rebels were victorious at the end 70-30.

Their next opponent was Grand Rapids. They had taken on International Falls and won 34-13. MLWR kept ahead of them the whole game. At the half-way mark, it was Rebels 25, Grand Rapids 12. They put it away at the end of the game, winning 44-26.

This victory placed them in the championship game against Hibbing. Hibbing had defeated Duluth Marshall 57-27 and Red Lake 67-47. The Rebels kept it close in the first half but were trailing at half-time by 12. Hibbing's players were much bigger than the Rebels and they had a great inside game that the Rebels had a hard time defending. Hibbing's defensive plays on MLWR's outside shooters took them out of the game. Hibbing only played five players and the bench players never saw any action.

The Rebels were second out of the twelve teams playing in Region 7. If Hibbing doesn't choose to play in the state in Maple Grove on Sunday, June 24, then the Rebels would be invited to compete. They also qualified to play in the Pacesetter Minnesota Invitational Tournament (MIT) on Saturday, June 23 in Maple Grove along with International Falls and the winner of the Red Lake/Grand Rapids game.
