Barnum elementary principal resigns

April 12, 2018

Editor’s Note: This statement was published by the Barnum Public Schools on Facebook on Friday, April 6. The Barnum Elementary Principal Tom Cawcutt was placed on a paid leave in January while allegations against him were investigated.

As many of you know, complaints made against Principal Tom Cawcutt have caused significant disruption and distraction at the elementary school.

The School Board authorized an investigation into those complaints after Mr. Cawcutt was placed on paid leave by Superintendent Dave Bottem. A thorough and comprehensive investigation has been completed by the District’s legal firm and then considered by the School Board. While that process was being completed, Mr. Cawcutt offered to enter an agreement that included his resignation from employment with the School District.

After a great deal of consideration, the School Board decided that, based on the report’s findings, it is in the best interests of the students, staff and School District to accept Mr. Cawcutt’s resignation, which will be effective June 30, 2018.

Under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Cawcutt will receive his pay and benefits through the end of the school year. Mr. Cawcutt will remain on leave during this time as it is legally required. Given data privacy issues under Minnesota law, we cannot disclose details associated with this matter.

The School Board would like to thank Interim Principal Scott Anderson for helping us through this time, and thank the elementary staff for their cooperation, discretion, and patience during this process.
