As far as weekends go, last weekend was about as newsworthy as it gets. Last Saturday America awoke to a mass of children, who for once got out of bed before the adults. I expect that for the youth of our nation who are fed up with getting beaten down or worse yet, shot down, this awakening is not one that will go away very soon. And it shouldn’t. I’ve long said true change in an America that works for all has to come from its youth.

Anyone close to me knows I have been an advocate for both change and youth. A year ago, I marched with women. On Saturday, I awoke to an aching body that just didn’t have the gumption to get out in the cold and march with the kids. After Saturday, I for one will no longer be calling them kids. They are our youth, and they are the future of America. A youth that is fed up as much with Washington, D. C. and its corrupt politicians as they are with the gun violence and the power of the NRA. What happened on Saturday is simply a reaction to our leadership and the violence it has spawned. And the violence has been there long before Trump took office.

On Sunday, was anyone shocked that the President of the United States allegedly had sex with a porn star? This is old news simply being rehashed in a new version. A different president dropped his drawers two decades ago and participated in a sexual act right there in our White House. I would at least like to think it is still our White House, although its days representing the people have long since vanished. Bill Clinton simply wasn’t as good at quantifying his lie (“I did not have sex with that woman”) as our current Commander-in-Chief. Is there anyone left in America who is surprised that Trump allegedly had sex with a porn star? Worse yet, does anyone even care? A poll taken among white evangelicals claiming to be Christians don’t seem to care. Why should the rest of us, including myself?

What I do care about is the fact that an American citizen, even one whose career path is that of a porn star, was threatened by the people now running our democracy. If that doesn’t bother you, then keep getting your entertainment from Fox or CNN.

Knowledge requires effort. Effort is what happened all over America and around the world last Saturday. A half-million youth stood together at the steps of our nation’s Capitol, repeating their new-found mantra, "Never Again." At first, I was ashamed as I sat in the warm comfort of my home watching a new movement taking shape. I should be out there in the streets joining in the battle to make our country the democracy it is supposed to be and once was. Then I realized, this is not my battle.

Although I have waited so long for this day to come (I began to feel it never would), I understood this movement belongs to America’s youth. I won’t exactly stand idly by on the sidelines but the movement created by our youth that had such an emotional beginning must live or die with them.

I was there a half-century ago as a youth when we shut down our institutions of higher learning attempting to stop an unjust war. Universities closed, yet our victory was short-lived. All we did was to insure that Nixon would win the presidency. And don’t think for one moment that our youth movement in the '60s is what drove Nixon from office. He did that to himself. They always do. It’s always the cover-up that gets them.

Someone needs to tell our current president that you don’t threaten your own citizens. Sometimes it’s with AR-15s aimed at our students. On Sunday, 60 Minutes made the claim that parties beholden to you, Mr. President, threatened an individual you used for your own self-gratification. In America, even porn stars count; or at least that’s the way things are supposed to work.

That pretty much sums up America. The youth are never shut up for long.
