Tournament hopes snatched from Bombers

March 22, 2018

The Barnum Bombers and the Virginia Blue Devils met on the hardwood of UMD’s Romano Gym on March 13. This would be a David vs. Goliath match-up, as the Bombers looked to avenge their loss to the Blue Devils earlier in the season.

Bombers started out strong, with senior Drake Weets finding room to drop in a pair of nice long balls, but the Bombers would find it difficult to get the ball inside to score as the long reach and speed of the Blue Devils would steal or block the ball anytime the Bombers would get inside the paint. The Bombers kept pace with the Blue Devils through the first half, trailing the Blue Devils only by four points going into halftime, 27-23.

In the second half, Bomber Weets cooled off, struggling to find the basket. Bomber Kyle Kielty would slide by the Devils to score a layup, Tyler Nynas got to the basket twice in the second half and went to the freethrow line three times to drop three of five freethrows. Blaze Hurst came to the line for a pair of free-throws for two second-half points. Alex Wheeler and Saul Myhre both dropped in long balls for three points each.

The Bombers fought hard defensively, only allowing 23 second-half points, but could not rally to score more than 20 points themselves. Turnovers were the downfall of the Bombers, as the Devils would create 16 turnovers during the game with 14 of them leading to Blue Devils points. The Bombers tournaments hopes ended with a 60-43 point loss.
