The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels fifth-grade boys started their travel season triumphant in a recent Mora tournament. MLWR jumped out to a 33-11 lead over Pine City in the opener and cruised to a 45-22 victory over the Dragons behind Dawson Kracke's double double and Levi Mikrot's 12 points.

All 11 Rebels players contributed in round two with a 36-21 win over a much larger school, Sartell. That pitted the Rebels against the hometown Mora Mustangs in the championship game.

After starting the game down 8-0, the Rebels' defense and fast breaks took over as they fought to a 30-18 lead with five minutes to play. However, in the next four minutes, the Mustangs closed the gap, helped by the Rebels' missing three consecutive one and one free throws. It was suddenly just a 32-28 lead with one minute to play. From then on, the Rebels held steady and came out with a 35-31 win.

The Mustangs were led by a tough point guard, but the Rebels' Eli Youngs proved tougher, continually frustrating him with his tough defense and offensively beating him to the hole with quick moves scoring 16 points. Reese Bode worked hard on the boards garnering 12 rebounds, and Dawson Kracke used his quickness to pry five steals.

Totals for Rebels tournament scoring: Youngs, 44 points; Mikrot, 21; Bode, 19; Kracke, 18; Brady Robbins, eight; Elliott Wasche, four; and Chase Claussen, two. Rebound leaders were Bode, 21; Kracke, 18; Wasche, 14; and Youngs, 12. Top assisters were Bode, six; Youngs, five; Wasche, four; and Kracke, three. Top pilferers were Youngs, 14; Kracke, eight; Robbins, five; and Wasche and Claussen, four each. The young Rebels hoopsters now have a month before their next tournament.
