It's time to take that leap

From the Editor

Wanted: Time machine — a device to travel backward or forward in time. If you know of such a device, please contact Colette Stadin immediately.

How I wish such a device existed. On numerous occasions I could have made great use of the ability to change the past or see the future.

Now is one such time.

I've put in my notice at the Star-Gazette — in fact as I write this, I have one more day in the office then I'm off to try a new career path. To take the leap into the unknown is scary, yes, but also exciting. I'll be working with an organization with a mission I completely believe in — to help children who need it most.

I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to take this adventure, but as I reflect on the last 14-plus years working in the newspaper business, I realize how much (and who) I am leaving behind.

I'm leaving behind people who have been amazing, capable, caring coworkers; they are my "newspaper family."

In March 2015, I wrote a column titled, "Know what matters most," and in that column I wrote, "As I observe others deal with tragedies and struggles, yet band together in the strong bond of family, I am reminded to hold dear to me those who mean the most."

A month later, we lost our beautiful 8-year-old daughter, Grace, in a tragic vehicle accident.

Dealing with loss of this magnitude has been incredibly difficult, but through it all has been my wonderful work family, offering strength when I had none of my own, extending a helping hand to make a day's work just a little easier. I will forever be grateful for the bond formed with this stellar bunch of individuals.

Though numerous events have been beyond challenging, I have learned that life is so much more than that. There is also much to celebrate and even more to experience. I have an amazing husband and two sons that are growing much too quickly.

With the loss of sweet, sassy Grace, I'm reminded to embrace this one life I have. It's time to take that leap and try something new.

So, remember, life is unpredictable and at times incredibly difficult. All we can do is make the most of it each and every day. There's no better way to do this than hand in hand with family.

Though, I still think a time machine would be helpful.
