Moose Lake man facing criminal sexual conduct charges

February 8, 2018

Paul Jeffers

Paul Jeffers, 64, Moose Lake, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree on December 12, 2017. Each count is a felony and carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and/or a $40,000 fine.

The criminal complaint states that Jeffers engaged in sexual penetration with another person more than 13 and under 16 years of age, and that Jeffers had a significant relationship with and was a person of authority over the victim.

On December 8, 2017, the Carlton County Sheriff's Office began an investigation into Jeffers after being informed of a report of a girl, who lives outside the county, being sexually assaulted. They reported this assault occurred at Jeffers' home outside of Moose Lake.

Court documents say Jeffers first started inappropriate contact with the minor in December 2016. Further criminal conduct happened with the victim at least four times the following summer, charges said.

Carlton County officers located Jeffers and placed him under arrest. Jeffers provided a statement and admitted to having sex with the victim and stated it happened multiple times at his residence.

Jeffers first appeared in court in Carlton County on December 12, 2017, and applied for a public defender, which was denied. He was also required not to have any unsupervised contact with any minors or with the alleged victim or the victim's parents.

Jeffers is scheduled to appear at a contested omnibus hearing in court on March 9 at 9 a.m.
