Carlton County attorney under investigation

January 18, 2018

Carlton County attorney Thom Pertler was investigated late last year by a law firm as directed by the Carlton County Board of Commissioners.

There had been complaints filed about Pertler last year, including the smell of alcohol on him at work, failure to file an important brief with the state attorney general’s office, reimbursement for mileage claimed that had not been driven, and poor morale in the county attorney’s office.

It was reported in the press that the investigators interviewed 12 people about Pertler’s actions in November and December.

A report was sent to the county board, and, when the board held its first meeting on January 2, Pertler was denied the 3 percent raise given to other elected officials, it was reported. Because Pertler is an elected official, he is not subject to disciplinary action as are employees, it was said.

Pertler denied the complaints about alcohol and poor morale, and said the mileage claim was an error. He did not know why the important brief was not filed, it was reported. He is consulting with another attorney. He did state he intends to seek re-election to the position of county attorney this year.

Pertler was convicted of third degree DWI in Duluth on July 8, 2012, and was released from Hazelton after treatment was completed. He joined the county attorney’s office in 1995 and became the county attorney in 2005, according to records.
