Federated to buy fertilizer plant

January 11, 2018

Federated Co-ops, Inc. is going to buy the fertilizer plant in Moose Lake, CEO Mike McMahon announced on Tuesday, January 2.

“We got a lot of feedback from the community saying that we should have bought the fertilizer plant,” he said in a telephone interview. “We decided to help out the community as best we can. We submitted a contract and the papers will be signed in a couple of weeks.”

McMahon went on to explain the purchase will include the fertilizer warehouse, located on the north end of Arrowhead Lane in Moose Lake, and all of the equipment, including the fertilizer spreaders.

Federated Co-ops, Inc. had purchased the gas station and feed store, formerly owned by the Moose Lake Cooperative Association, on December 20, 2017.

“It was a package deal,” he said in the telephone interview on January 2.

When asked about the feed store in Askov, which was also owned by the Moose Lake Cooperative, he said, “We decided that we were not going to get into that,” he said. “We didn’t want to bite off more than we can chew.”

Cattle gates and other farm supplies had also been sold by the Moose Lake Cooperative Association.

McMahon said Federated Co-ops may sell that type of equipment in the future, but that is still being considered.

He added the building that had once been the co-op office on Industrial Road was being purchased by someone else, as far as he knew. Federated was not going to buy that building.
