MLA girls eke out O.T. win

After having doubled up North Shore by a score of 6-3 on November 14, the Moose Lake Area girls hockey team needed overtime to eke out a 3-2 win over the Storm at Riverside Arena on Tuesday, December 19. Sophomore goalie Jo Ruby Wekseth, who had an excellent junior varsity season last year, got her first varsity start of this year. Wekseth earned the win by making 18 saves on 20 shots. The Rebels out-shot the Storm 31-20, including 5-0 in overtime. Both teams were blanked on their respective power plays. MLA came up empty at 0-2, but the kill crew stayed hot as they fought off all four of the Storms’ advantages, now allowing opponents only four goals on 36 advantages (11.1 percent).

Wekseth’s saves percentage went to .920 to be .001 behind senior goalie Maddy Gamst, who was listed to have a .921 and a goals against average of 2.44 on Thursday, December 21. After eighth-grade forward Gabby Gamst had her empty-netter last week, she was credited two assists, including the assist on Savannah Gamst’s overtime game-winner.

MLA trailed 1-0 after one period, but third-leading points-getter Lauren Pederson added another goal to her tally for 1-1 at 2:46 of the second period. Pederson's totals went to 2-7-9. Pederson was assisted by MLA points-leader Ruby Mohelsky, who has 12 points. Fourth-leading points-getter Abby Painovich had assists to go to 2-4-6. The Storm answered with an assisted goal to take the lead back at 2-1 at 6:43.

Josie Benzie went to 2-1-3 as it was knotted up 3-3 at 11:45 of the third period. Gabby Gamst got her first varsity assist. Second-leading points-getter Jamie Benzie went to 5-6-11, as she was also credited with an assist.

Savannah Gamst’s game-winner to take her to 3-0-3, came at 7:48 of overtime and was assisted by Gabby Gamst who now is at 1-2-3.
