Rebels Maddie Olson and DonnaMae Smith work to block against Bomber Alexis Bonneville in Moose Lake September 7.

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels were looking for their third sweep in a row, but they were forced to go to a fourth set by the Barnum Bombers in Moose Lake on Thursday, September 7. The set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-27 and 25-15.

The third set had some of the evening's most exciting action. Barnum battled back from being down 11-17 and then staved off two set points to recover from 22-24. The Bombers were further inspired by a key solo block by Megan Laine to take a 26-25 lead before winning the set 27-25.

Lauren Pederson played very good all-around volleyball to lead the Rebels. The senior had eight kills. Pederson added three solo blocks and two service aces. Sophomore DonnaMae Smith was credited with 22 set assists. Smith led the Rebels on serve as she spanked four aces and she added eight digs. Maddie Olson had eight kills and she added one service ace. Ruby Mohelsky had four kills, three solo blocks and one service ace. Josie Benzie was listed with 11 digs. Jamie Benzie had six kills.

Barnum senior Lea Peterson, listed as an outside hitter, showed very good versatility and leadership. Peterson led the Bombers with 10 set assists. She added two solo blocks and two service aces. Laine had two solo attacks and two solo blocks. Emily Miletich had five kills.

The Rebels, improving to 3-0, have a very big test on the horizon as they travel up the North Shore on Thursday, September 14, with an early start time, to play a very good Cook County team. The Vikings have UMD recruit Meredith Sutton, who as of Thursday, September 7, led the area with 4.3 kills per game and 8.2 digs per game. Cook County needed all five sets to hand 3-2 Esko its second loss on Thursday, September 7.

The MLWR varsity girls have an opportunity to further hone their skills as they play at the Crosby-Ironton tournament beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 16. The regular-season tests resume as the Rebels head to Esko on Thursday, September 21, with game time at 7 p.m.
