The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels volleyball team started the season strong by sweeping the Jaguars at Hinckley on Tuesday, August 29. The Rebels christened their new court with a second sweep as they dispatched the Two Harbors Agates in one hour and 25 minutes on a bright and smooth main court at the Moose Lake Community School on Thursday, August 31.

The impressive set scores against the Agates were 25-15, 25-20 and 25-10. The Rebels were particularly fierce in the first and the final set where they racked up 14 and 13 points, respectively, while on the attack. The Rebels had 10 service aces against eight service errors with four aces coming in the first set and five service errors coming in the second set. Two Harbors had only three aces and it suffered seven service errors with all those miscues coming in the second set, but MLWR had only five points coming off attacks in that set.

The Rebels attack was led by junior middle hitter Maddie Olson and sophomore setter DonnaMae Smith. Olson made the double digits with 10 kills and Smith put up 20 tasty set assists. Olson added a pair of blocks and one dig. Smith added two digs and two service aces. Senior libero Josie Benzie had 15 digs and she added one service ace. Newly-minted sophomore outside hitter Jamie Benzie filled her role well as she had nine kills and she added one set assist. Senior middle hitter Ruby Mohelsky had four service aces and she added two kills. Senior outside hitter Lauren Pederson had four kills and five digs and she added one service ace. Senior Suzy Grutkoski, taking on a new role as an outside hitter, had three kills and added one dig. Senior defensive specialist Adre Dobosenski had two service aces. Senior Kennedy Janke had a little late-match action and she managed to get one unassisted kill. Junior setter Kjersten Weisert also rotated in late and she made one dig.

The Agates got six kills from junior outside hitter Tori Bott. Senior outside hitter Brenna Gelineau and junior libero Makenna Coan had 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

The 2-0 Rebels host the Barnum Bombers at MLWR's new gym on Thursday, September 7, with the junior varsity to play at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity scheduled to play at approximately 7 p.m. The Rebels play the Cloquet Lumberjacks at home on Tuesday, September 12. The long trip to play the Cook County Vikings, with a 5:15 p.m. early start for the JV and a 6:30 p.m. start for the varsity, is on Thursday, September 14. The Vikings were one of the early picks by some to take the Section 7A title.
