Elementary students score high in MCAs

Building projects near completion at Barnum Public Schools

August 31, 2017

Most of the summer projects have been completed or are nearing completion, Superintendent Dave Bottem reported to the Barnum School Board at the monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 15.

“The handrails are being installed in the auditorium,” he said. “The stage floor is done and a rolling shutter has been installed on the booth in the back of the auditorium. It locks on the inside and will protect the equipment.

“In the elementary school, the cafeteria was painted last week. The new air handler was installed. It feels like the building is air conditioned now. The band storage area is getting cleaned. The new cabinets will be coming next week.

“The carpet for some areas hasn't been installed yet, but we hope to get it done before school starts. The work on RJM Park hasn't been completed yet. The new sidewalks are getting poured, and they are filling dirt in behind the gutters and will plant grass seed.”

High School Principal Brian Kasmierczek reported his office furniture has been updated, some changes in the handbook have been made and he is ready for another school year.

Elementary Principal Tom Cawcutt reported the test scores for Barnum Elementary School students had shown growth.

“I hope you folks realize the elementary students had the highest test scores in the county,” he said. “Our math scores rocketed, and the reading score maintained. We have provided a fantastic education for our kids.”

Members are needed for the Barnum Parent-Teacher Organization, he added.

The open house for the elementary school is Wednesday, August 30, from 4-6 p.m., and for the high school the same day from 5:30-7:30 p.m., it was reported by both principals.

Bottem said he was very pleased they received two applications from outstanding candidates for the open math position. The board passed a motion to hire Alexis Crotteau for the position.

Kaitlin Warpula was hired as an Early Childhood teacher, Linda Redetzke was hired as the junior high volleyball coach, and Sean Jones was hired as the junior high football coach.

The next meeting of the Barnum School Board was set for Tuesday, September 19, at 6:30 p.m.
