Barnum school updates under way

Barnum Public Schools

Barnum Elementary School gym bleachers are getting sanded and refinished this summer.

The Barnum school board dealt with a light agenda on Tuesday, July 18, before closing the meeting near the end for the superintendent evaluation.

Superintendent Dave Bottem reported a TV studio will be installed in the high school auditorium and that programs will be shown in the commons area.

He also reported all back stage lighting will be changed to LED lights.

The flooring on the stage will also be replaced this summer, he added.

"That's 170 boards," he said. "The sets are screwed to the floor for plays and sometimes the screws don't come out well."

The elementary gym floor has been replaced, but there are a few boards that did not absorb the finish, said Bottem. Those will be replaced.

The bleachers in the elementary gym have been sanded and a coat of sealer has been applied.

"The gym looks brand new," he told the board.

New carpet has been installed in portions of the elementary school, said Bottem. Cabinets have been done also. The custodians are now working at the high school.

Improvements have also been made at RJM Park.

A photo of the bleacher refinishing project has been placed on the school's website and on Facebook.

Many of the lights on the football field have been replaced.

The SAFE Routes to School projects will be completed by August 24.

The board approved hiring Cathy Robinson as the ESY teacher. Costs will be shared with the Willow River and Moose Lake school districts.

School board meetings will continue to be held on the third Tuesday of the month in the board room at the high school at 6:30 p.m.

The board approved changing the employee health insurance from Northeast Service Cooperative to the Public Employee Insurance Program, effective September 1.

The next meeting of the board was set for Tuesday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m.
