Rebel Laura Walker had two one-RBI singles, including the walk-off game-winner in Willow River on Thursday, May 18.

Although Laura Walker did not get the pitching win, she made up for it with her bat as her second one-RBI single of the game came in the eighth inning and boosted the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels girls to a 5-4 win over the Mora Mustangs on Thursday, May 18, in Willow River. The Rebels improved to 12-7. Mora's record went to 7-10.

The Mustangs had 10 hits, including one double. The Rebels had nine hits, including eight singles and Nicole Newham's fifth solo home run of the season.

Walker pitched four innings with three strikeouts and only one walk, but the Mustangs got to her for seven hits and four runs. Only two of those runs were earned runs. Ally Bode ended up earning her seventh win as she pitched four innings with no strikeouts and three walks, but she gave up only three hits and no runs.

Sage Wren took the loss for Mora with one strikeout and only one walk, but she allowed nine hits and four earned runs.

Mora stranded 10, including seven in scoring position. The Rebels stranded six, including four in scoring position. The Mustangs had two errors. The second error subsequently scored MLWR's winning run. The Rebels also had two errors. One error allowed two runs to score on the same play.

It was Walker's hitting that would get it done in the bottom of the eighth inning. After Lauren Pederson reached on what was only the Mustangs' second error, first base coach Mark Carlson rolled the dice and sent Pederson for the game's only steal. Pederson barely made it as the tag was a fraction of a second late with the ball ruled to have been juggled a bit before the tag. Josie Benzie advanced Pederson to third with a sacrifice bunt. With two out and Sage Gerard at the plate, the Rebels tried one safety squeeze. Gerard bunted one foul with Pederson about half way home. Gerard popped to short. With two out, Walker, who had earlier ripped a one-RBI single up the middle, stepped in. Walker hit a line drive RBI single into centerfield for a walk-off game-winner that scored Pederson for a 5-4 win.

Other Rebel successes in terms of hitting, RBIs and runs scored are as follows: Newham, one-RBI single, one solo home run; Pederson, one fielder's choice RBI, steal, scored game-winning run; Natalie Mikrot, two hustled-out infield hits, run; Josie Benzie, single, run; Marissa Mikrot, single, run; and Bode, single.

Jamie Benzie made the outstanding defensive play of the game as she gunned down a runner trying to tag up and go to third.
