Local Memorial Day services



Peterson Westerberg American Legion Post #415 of Barnum will conduct Memorial Day Services at the Barnum High School auditorium on May 29 at 10 a.m. Music provided by the Barnum High School band, directed by Jeff Gilbertson. Guest speaker and officiate is Pastor Hal Kamppi. Concluding at Riverside Cemetery in Barnum.

Services will be at Mt. Salem Cemetery at Mahtowa directly following services in Barnum. Guest speaker is Kendall Carlson.


The Carlton VFW Color Guard will hold Memorial Day services on May 29 at the following locations:

- 7 a.m. leave Carlton

- Eagle Lake Cemetery at 7:45 a.m.

- Cromwell Cemetery at 8:10 a.m.

- Sandy Lake Cemetery at 8:50 a.m.

- Elim Lutheran Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

- Oak Lake Cemetery at 9:55 a.m.

- Holyoke Cemetery at 10:25 a.m.

- Silverbrook Cemetery (Wrenshall) at 11:05 a.m.

- Hillside Cemetery (Carlton) at 11:30 a.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend and honor veterans.


VFW Post #8299 Floodwood Memorial Day services on May 29

- Wright Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery at 8 a.m.

- Fine Lake Cemetery at 9 a.m.

- Cedar Valley Cemetery at 10 a.m.

- Van Buren Cemetery at 11 a.m.

- Floodwood Hope Lutheran Cemetery at noon

Lunch served at Fair Building, city of Floodwood.


Memorial Day services in Kettle River will be held on May 29 at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Building following the service will be a potluck lunch at the Senior Center. The Legion members will not be doing services at any of the cemeteries this year, so plan to attend the service at the Veterans Building.


Memorial Day observance Monday, May 29, 10 a.m., at the Moose Lake High School auditorium. Under the auspices of the Moose Lake Pedersen-Maunula American Legion Post #379 of Moose Lake, the annual Memorial Day program is presented, in collaboration with the Moose Lake Community Band, Autumn Voices, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies, Moose Lake School District #97 and the American Legion Honor Guard.

- Introduction and welcome, Ken Jackson, Vice Commander

- The Posting of the Colors, American Legion Honor Guard

- National Anthem, Moose Lake Community Band under the direction of Ted Eastman and Merton Sheetz

- Pledge of Allegiance, Ken Jackson, Vice Commander

- Invocation, Pastor

- Musical Selection, Autumn Voices under the direction of Tim Hobaugh; accompanied by the Moose Lake Community Band

- Musical Medley, sung by: Edie Burkard, Cindy Carlson, Kent Mathews and Mary Kruse with Reggie Garvey on piano

- Introduction Speaker, Ken Jackson, Vice Commander

- Memorial Day Speaker: Mike Peterson

Mike Peterson was born and raised in Moose Lake. He still claims it is the best place in the world to grow up and raise a family. He served in the U.S. Army and did a tour in Vietnam in a target aquisition unit, First Field Forces. He has been a part of Moose Lake Post #379 Honor Guard for 31 years.

Peterson met his wife, Julie, two days after returning from the service, and raised two children in Moose Lake. He has not missed a Memorial Day program since returning from Vietnam. Mike presently serves on the Moose Lake City Council and has also been an officer on the Cromwell Fire and Ambulance Service for the past 34 years. He, his wife and children own and operate Villa Vista Court, an assisted living community in Cromwell.

- Retire the Colors, American Legion Honor Guard

- Moose Lake Area Veterans Memorial Park: At the conclusion of the program, you are cordially invited to join the groups as they march to the Moose Lake Area Veterans Memorial Park where the traditional service will be conducted.

Following the service at Veterans Park, coffee and cookies will be served at the Moose Lake Area Historical Society’s 1918 Depot Museum. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.


Sturgeon Lake/Denham American Legion Post #361 Memorial Day schedule for Monday, May 29:

- St. Isidore’s Church in Sturgeon Lake at 9 a.m.

- Blomskog Cemetery at 9:20 a.m.

- St. Isidore’s Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.

- Sturgeon Lake Cemetery at 10:10 a.m.

- Nordland Cemetery at 10:40 a.m.

- Faith Lutheran Cemetery at 11 a.m.

- Methodist Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.


Willow River American Legion Post #163 Memorial Day services will be held Monday, May 29, at 10 a.m. in Willow River and 11 a.m. in Rutledge.
