The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team bounced back from the disappointing slip to the Mirage on Thursday, January 27 to build confidence by beating a very good International Falls Broncos team 4-2 at Riverside Arena on a Saturday, January 28, 2 p.m. matinee. The Rebels improved to 17-5-1. The Broncos dropped to 13-7-1.

Shots on goal for two periods were in I-Falls' favor at 11-7 and 12-10, but the Rebels fired away in the final frame at 16-5 for a game total in MLA's favor of 33-28. It was in that last frame the Rebels got the game-winning goal and an insurance goal while blanking the Broncos in the period.

Maddy Gamst earned her 16th win with 26 saves. The Broncos went 1-for-2 on the power play while MLA was unable to convert its only opportunity. Jessica Bird had a goal that held up to be the game-winner and two assists to pace the Rebels and to go to 45 goals and 65 points. Sage Gerard had two goals, including an insurance goal. Gerard went 12 goals and 29 assists for 41 points.

Michaela Belanger, a freshman defenseman, who scored her first two goals back on January 3, got the game's first goal at 9:33 and she went to seven points. Jamie Benzie's assist was her sixth to go along with 10 goals for 16 points. I-Falls was able to tie with an unassisted effort at 10:28.

The Rebels had some very good passing during the early aspects of the second stanza, especially by MLA assist-leader Gerard, and they were extremely sharp on the play-making with some excellent close-in shots on goal for repeated pressure. Gerard was on the doorstep and she ended up being the recipient of an assist from Jessica Bird for 2-1 at 6:51 as MLA's continuous converging by the crease to create havoc finally paid off. It was Gerard's 11th goal to go along with 29 assists for 40 points. The Broncos' Lexi Edwards, coming in with 24 goals and 29 assists for 53 points, combined with I-Falls' other 53-point scorer, Amber Tilander, who came in with 33 goals and 20 assists, on a power play goal at 8:23 to knot it back up at 2-2

Moose Lake Area did an outstanding job of getting and holding the zone in the final frame, out-shooting the Broncos 16-5. It was Jessica Bird and Lauren Pederson, who got the assist for her 21st point, combining at 8:23 of the third period to score what would hold up to be the 3-2 game-winner. Gerard, Jamie Bird and Jessica Bird tallied an insurance goal at 9:12 for 4-2. The assist was Jamie Bird's 16th point.

The regular season ends on the road as the Rebels play a struggling Duluth North Stars team on Friday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. Section 7A first round playoff action begins on Thursday, February 9, at the higher seed at 7 p.m.
