Bombers pull away from Rebels for win

Despite leading only 30-29 at halftime and the Rebels reigning far supreme on free throws, the Bombers were significantly superior on the inside and with three-pointers to pull away for a 73-63 win in Barnum on Thursday, December 8. There were a total of 52 free throws in the nearly one and three-quarter hour game that was marred by over 40 fouls.

The Bombers had better balance among top scorers as they had four girls in double digits while the Rebels had two girls in double figures. Although Barnum's junior forward and co-captain Emily Miletich went in at halftime with three fouls, she shook it off and got hot and sliced and diced the lane for 14 of her team-high 21 points in the second half. Senior guard and co-captain Bailey Wheeler had 16 points, including two three-pointers, and she earned a double-double as she had 10 rebounds. Mallory Agurkis had 14 points, including sinking three bombs from beyond the arc. Kaitlyn Skutevik had 12 points, including one three-pointer.

MLWR's senior guard and captain Ally Bode hit the double digits for the fourth game in a row and led all scorers with a career-high 27 points, including two three-pointers. Bode earned a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds and she went 7-for-8 on free throws. Seventh-grader Natalie Mikrot had also had a career-high as she scored 17 points. Mikrot went 11-for-13 on free throws and she added two three-pointers.

Barnum went 8-for-21 (38 percent) on three-pointers while MLWR went 5-for-15 (33 percent) outside the arc. The Bombers went 19-for-39 (49 percent) on the inside to finish with a combined 27-for-60 (45 percent). The Rebels went 10-for-37 (27 percent) on the inside to end up with a combined 15-for-52 (29 percent). MLWR was excellent at the foul line as they went 28-for-35 (80 percent) as a team. The Bombers went a fairly strong 11-for-17 (65 percent) at the stripe.

MLWR won the first half rebound battle at 23-13, but Barnum came back to take the second half boards at 21-15 with the Rebels ending up being slightly better at 38-34 on rebounding. Barnum clearly took the take-away stat with 19 steals and several scores came on break-aways.. The Rebels were able to scrap for seven steals. The Bombers also had the better play-making with a 12-6 advantage on the assists. Both teams had their troubles taking care of the basketball with Barnum committing 26 turnovers and the Rebels ending up with 28 lost possessions.
