Six-game winning streak ends

Moose Lake Area Rebel Jessica Bird had an unassisted effort, her 15th goal of the season, at 12:52 of the third period December 3 at Riverside Arena.

The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team hosted and Maddy Gamst earned her second shut-out in a row as the Rebels beat the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears 6-0 at Riverside Arena on Tuesday, November 29.

The 5-0 Rebels out-shot the Golden Bears 28-14 and went 2-for-3 on the power play while blanking the Golden Bears at 0-for-2. The Rebels improved to 9-for-17 (53 percent) on converting power plays for the season. The MLA penalty killers advanced to allowing only one power play goal in 13 faced (eight percent). MLA has out-scored opponents 27-5 and the Rebels have out-shot opponents 155-99 in five games. The Rebels junior varsity team is also undefeated at 5-0.

Gamst's efforts tied her for second with three other Class A goalies in the state with five wins. Gamst went to fifth in goals against average at 1.00 and to ninth in saves percentage at .949 with the leader at .972.

Jessica Bird had another big night as she had her third hat trick of the year and she added two assists. Bird went to fourth in State Class A with 12 goals with the leader at 17 and she improved to be tied for third in points with 19 with the leader at 26. Sage Gerard had one goal and she racked up four assists. Gerard moved into an eight-way tie for fifth in State Class A with 10 assists with the leader at 14 assists. Gerard went to 14 points this year.

After there was no scoring in the first frame, the Rebels got on the roll to tally five goals in the second stanza. Lauren Pederson got her fifth goal of the season to get things started, with assists going to Bird and Gerard at 3:57. Pederson went to nine points on the season. Bird, Kiersten Evenson and Gerard combined at 7:50. Bird, Gerard and Pederson worked the power play for 3-0 at 8:45. Ruby Mohelsky, Lexi Bonneville and Jamie Benzie got the Rebels second power play goal at 12:03. Bird scored her hat trick goal at 14:55, with assists going to Josie Benzie and Gerard, for 5-0 heading into the final frame.

Gerard got the last goal of the game just 22 ticks into the third period, with assists going to Jamie Benzie and Bird, for the 6-0 shut-out. Jamie Benzie went to six points on the season.

Rebels slip past South St. Paul

The Rebels slipped past South St. Paul with a 3-2 win at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake on Friday, December 2. Each team had 20 shots on goals with Gamst earning her sixth consecutive win in goal with 18 saves.

Bird had two goals and one assist to go to 22 points on year. Evenson picked up her fourth assist of the season on Bird's first goal. Bird's second goal was unassisted. Jamie Benzie got the game-winner at 10:10 of the third period with assists going to Bird and Abby Painovich. All of Painovich's six points are on assists this year.

MLA girls win streak ended

The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team had their six-game winning streak come to an end as they lost 3-1 to Dodge Center at Riverside Area in Moose Lake on Saturday, December 3. The 6-1 Rebels were out-shot 23-17 with Gamst making 20 saves in her first loss in goal.

Bird's unassisted effort at 12:52 of the third period was her 15th goal of the season.
