Jamie Benzie had two of the Rebels' nine goals at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake on Friday, November 11.

The Moose Lake Area Rebels girls hockey team opened its season with an impressive win as they raced past the North Shore Storm 9-1 in running time at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake on Friday, November 11.

Maddy Gamst, who had a .901 saves percentage last year, earned the win in goal as she stopped 19 out of 20 shots to start this season with a .950 saves percentage. The Rebels peppered the North Shore goalie, Grace Heitala, with 43 shots on goal. Period-by-period, MLA out-shot the Storm 13-4, 17-12 and 13-4.

The penalty count was low and even for both teams with each squad taking a seat just three times for only six minutes of total box time apiece. But it was the Rebels going 2-for-3 on the power play while MLA's penalty kill made the Storm come up empty on the advantage.

With the Rebels having all nine scores being assisted goals, nine separate MLA girls ended up getting into the score book with either goals or assists. Jessica Bird, last year's top Northland goal-getter and overall leader with 58 points, had an excellent start to the 2016-17 season. Bird had a hat trick and three assists for a six-point opener. Sage Gerard, another high scorer and top play-maker last season with 32 points, had two goals and one assist. Ruby Mohelsky had one goal and two assists. Abby Painovich had three assists and she accomplished that as a defenseman. Jamie Benzie had two goals with her second goal holding up to be the game-winner. Lauren Pederson had one goal and one assist. Elea Anderson had two assists. Defenseman Chloe Gamst had one assist and defenseman Maddie Olson, who recently joined the team, also had one assist.

Gerard, Painovich and Bird got the fun started at 4:04. Benzie, Mohelsky and Olson followed at 9:06. Benzie, Anderson and Mohlesky clicked at 12:12. The Storm escaped a shut out as they got an assisted goal at 16:54 of the first period for 3-1, Rebels.

Bird and Gerard worked for a power play goal at 5:18. Bird and Chloe Gamst connected at 12:54 to make it 5-1 heading into the final frame.

The Rebels went on to rack up four goals in the third period. It was Bird from Pederson at 3:29. The two forwards reversed roles just 29 seconds later as it was Pederson from Bird at 3:58. Mohelsky, with assists by Anderson and Painovich, scored at 8:49 to send it into running time at 8-1. The Rebels' second power play goal came at 11:31 as Gerard, Bird and Painovich closed out the Moose Lake Area scoring assault.

The Rebels host Cambridge/Isanti/Mora/Pine City on Thursday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Arena. MLA starts a five-game home stretch on Tuesday, November 29, when they host Eleveth-Gilbert at 7:30 p.m. That is followed by South St. Paul on Friday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m.; Dodge County on Saturday, December 3, at 5 p.m.; Superior on Tuesday, December 6, at 7 p.m.; and Duluth Marshall on Tuesday, December 13, at 7:30 p.m.
