On Tuesday, September 20, it was another nice day to run for the Rebels of Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum as they headed to Grand Rapids for the JA Curran Invite.

For this meet, the top 15 in the junior high and junior varsity races received ribbons and for the varsity races, the top five received medals and sixth through 15th received ribbons.

No Rebels girls ran the junior high race, but for the boys, the distance was raised to 3200 meters (about two miles). Running for the boys was Jonathan Danelski, placing fifth in 12:24; Grant Pettit, 16th in 14:02; Anson Vargo, 45th in 16:12; Levi Granda, 46th in 16:12; Sam Collier, 56th in 17:53; and Carl Halverson, 57th in 18:10.

Running in the junior varsity girls race was Kelli Granquist, placing third in 25:29; Meghan Granquist, sixth in 26:16; Lily Geil, ninth in 29:49; Giannalisa Siebott, 10th in 29:56; and Alexis Oswald, 15th in 31:39.

In the JV boys race, David Webb took fifth in 19:36; Mark Fossum, sixth in 19:38; Aaron Bode, seventh in 19:39; Tim Vogt, ninth in 20:17; Michael Olson, 13th in 20:41; Maverick Koecher, 16th in 20:48; Wheeler Anderson, 17th in 20:59; Levi Skelton, 33rd in 23:08; Lucas Koecher, 38th in 23:42; Sam Stadin, 39th in 23:49; Spencer Lower, 41st in 24:11; Caleb Kimmel, 42nd in 24:15; and Nate Jungers, 45th in 25:00.

The varsity girls had a close race and took third as a team after a tie breaker where they look at the sixth place runners to break the tie for points. Because the Rebels' sixth runner placed higher than the other team's, they were awarded third place. Running for the girls were Savannah Gamst, sixth in 21:32; Laya Danelski, 19th in 23:31; Sydney Bexell, 21st in 23:37; Charis Blacklock, 23rd in 23:59; Sophie Richardson, 28th in 24:47; Lexi Tekippe, 29th in 24:48; and Coriella Sheetz, 30th in 25:08.

The Rebels boys varsity had a fourth place team finish with Ethan Olson first in 17:02; Joe Bustrak, ninth in 18:03; Tan Dipman, 16th in 18:33; Lake Doran, 24th in 18:58; Jacob Danelski, 27th in 19:04; Danny Whited, 29th in 19:12; and Henry Collier, 32nd in 19:31.

On Saturday, the Rebels were in Milaca for the Mega Meet. With over 100 schools present and over 4,750 runners, it could have made for a long day, but there is a system in place that allows for races to start every 15 minutes. With a total of 18 races, the first race of the day was at 10 a.m. and the last started at 2:15 p.m. The weather was once again very nice with cloudy skies and temps in the mid-60s, however, the course was very wet due to recent rains, making for a muddy course for runners.

Highlights of the day were the eighth grade boys team finishing 15th out of 28 teams. The junior varsity boys team finished 20th out of 42 teams and the varsity girls finished 17th out of 24 teams.

The boys varsity team has seen a steady improvement each of the last three years attending this meet. Two years ago, they had a 15th place finish, last year a seventh place finish and this year they were sixth out of 21 teams.

For individuals, the top seven received trophies and eighth through 25th place received ribbons.

In the girls varsity race, Savannah Gamst received a ribbon for her 25th place finish out of 164 runners in 21:05. For the varsity boys, Ethan Olson received a trophy for his fourth place finish out of 155 runners in 16:56. Along with these accomplishments, it was said a few other runners made personal records for themselves.

Next up for the Rebels is the Swain Invite in Duluth on Saturday, October 1, at Enger Park Golf Course. Let's hope the weather cooperates this year; the last four years have been very windy and cold with either rain or snow flurries.
