Rebels runners start season strong

Another cross country season has begun for the Rebels of Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum. The first meet of the season was at the hilly course in Grand Marais at the Pincushion Trails on Thursday, September 1. With temps around 66 and a light wind with partly cloudy skies, it was a great day to race.

Starting off the day's races was the junior high girls and boys running a distance of 2.6 kilometers. The top 10 finishers received medals. For the girls it was Kelli Granquist finishing 10th in 13:03, Lexi Korpela 17th in 14:00 and Anna Molis 26th in 21:10. For the boys it was Wheeler Anderson finishing eighth in 10:44, Maverick Koecher 14th in 11:04, Sam Stadin 15th in 11:07, Grant Pettit 24th in 11:29, Anson Vargo 42nd in 12:54, Levi Granda 44th in 13:12 and Sam Collier 54th in 17:29.

Running next was the junior varsity girls and boys, running a distance of 4 kilometers. The top 10 finishers in this race also received medals. The only girls JV runner was exchange student Giannalisa Siebott finishing 13th in 20:53. In the boys race it was Michael Olson finishing fourth in 15:59, Lucas Koecher eighth in 16:27 and Spencer Lower 29th in 19:23.

The Rebels varsity girls race is a 5 kilometer course that had the top 15 receiving medals. Savannah Gamst led the girls with an 11th place finish in 22:45, followed by Sydney Bexell 26th in 24:50, Laya Danelski 27th in 25:15, Lauren Hartman 29th in 25:27, Charis Blacklock 35th in 26:28, Coriella Sheetz 40th in 27:02, Sophie Richardson 41st in 27:09, Meghan Granquist 42nd in 30:58 and Lily Geil 43rd in 33:29. The girls ended up with a fifth place team finish.

The Rebels varsity boys also run a 5 kilometer course, with the top 15 receiving medals. The boys ended up with a third place team finish. Leading the boys team was Ethan Olson with a second place finish in 17:09, Tan Dipman followed in 10th at 19:06, Lake Doran 17th in 19:36, Henry Collier 23rd in 20:02, Aaron Bode 27th in 20:12, Jacob Danelski 29th in 20:18, Danny Whited 30th in 20:21, David Webb 31st in 20:21, Tim Vogt 46th in 21:28 and Levi Skelton 57th in 23:32.

The next meet for the Rebels will be the GNK Titan Invite at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Coleraine on Thursday, September 8, at 4 p.m.
