Rebels breeze by Jaguars in opener

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels volleyball team beat the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars in the August 30 season opener in Moose Lake.

It took the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels volleyball team just one hour and 20 minutes to breeze by the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars in a three set sweep in the 2016 volleyball season opener in Moose Lake on Tuesday, August 30. The set scores in the quick match were 25-19, 25-5, 25-14.

Head coach Beckie Jackson, in her sixth season and with a 17-11 record last year, rotated two setters in the offensive strategy and the balance worked well. Freshman DonnaMae Smith had an excellent varsity debut as she had 10 set assists. Smith added three ace serves. Senior setter Skyler Hoffmann had nine set assists. Hoffmann added two ace serves. .

Senior hitter Sage Gerard racked up 10 kills, plus she helped out the defense with 13 digs and she added one ace serve. Classmate Ally Bode hit for five kills and she led the team in digs with 16. Bode paced the team in ace serves as she rattled off a run of four in a row in the first set. Junior libero Josie Benzie hustled for 12 digs and she had one bump fall in for a point and she added one ace serve. Sophomore Maddie Olson had four kills and she patrolled the middle for two solo blocks. Senior lefty hitter Nicole Newham had four kills and she added one dig. Junior Ruby Mohelsky had three kills and she added two ace serves.

Others on the Rebels varsity roster included senior Steph Pasek and juniors Adre Dobosenski, Suzy Grutkoski and Lauren Pederson.

The Rebels service game was strong as they fired 13 aces. MLWR kept the service errors down to five for a net gain of eight points. The Jaguars managed only two service aces and they had three service errors for a factor of minus one. Hinckley-Finlayson exited the gym quickly and its other statistical information was not able to be gathered.

Coach Tonya Benzie provided information on the junior varsity match. The Rebels won the match two sets to one. The Rebels set scores were 25-10, 22-25, 15-11.

Members of the junior varsity roster were listed as follows: Freshmen Jamie Benzie and Maddy Prachar; Sophomores Elea Anderson, Kaitlin Ballantine, Rosalind Geil, Ashley Grutkoski, Kennedy Janke, Ellie Schaumberg, Lilli Skelton and Kjersten Weisert; Juniors Dobosenski, Suzy Grutkoski and Pederson.

The Rebels travel to Barnum on Thursday, September 8, for a match scheduled to start at 7 p.m. MLWR is at the Pine City Tournament on Saturday, September 10, with play to begin at 9 a.m. The Rebels visit Cloquet on Tuesday, September 13, for a 7 p.m. match. Then MLWR hosts the Cook County Vikings on Thursday, September 15 with an early start time of 6:30 p.m.

All the remaining regular season matches, except for tournaments, start at approximately 7 p.m. after the completion of the junior varsity matches that begin at 5:45 p.m.
