Cloquet man arrested for burglary

A Cloquet man is facing a felony charge after allegedly breaking into the Pine County impound lot in Sandstone.

On July 18, Branden David Welch, 34, was arrested on charges of possession of burglary or theft tools, a felony, and tampering with a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.

Just four days before, Welch had posted bail out of the Carlton County jail, and has three pending felony cases against him, two for felony firearm possession and one for felony controlled substances.

According to the criminal complaint, Pine County dispatch notified authorities just before 2 a.m. July 18 there was an unauthorized person in the impound lot. Deputies checked the fence perimeter and found the gate was locked, and the fence didn’t appear to be cut. They searched the interior of the lot and found Welch hiding under a truck. According to the charging document, Welch had two compact flashlights on him, and nearby, a sheathed filet knife, a canister of lighter fluid and an electronic cable were found.

Surveillance video showed the defendant entering several vehicles on the property. Deputies later discovered a black sport utility vehicle (SUV) registered to Welch nearby that contained numerous tools, personal care items and women’s clothing. A vehicle battery was located near the roadway between the impound lot and the abandoned vehicle.
