Two arrested for Cromwell robbery

Skyler Hakala

On Sunday evening, July 3, at approximately 9 p.m., the Carlton County Sheriff's Office received a report of a robbery involving a handgun near the Cromwell Pavilion in the city of Cromwell. The victims indicated they were robbed at gunpoint by two individuals and that the suspects eventually left the area upon the completion of the robbery.

The victims had previously made arrangements with the suspects via the Internet to meet at the pavilion to potentially complete a purchase. It was at the time the parties met to discuss the purchase that the robbery took place. The victims were able to give a description of the suspect vehicle as well as identify both individuals to the responding law enforcement agencies.

A short time after receiving identifying information relating to the suspects, officers from the Duluth Police Department located the vehicle and eventually apprehended the two suspects, Skyler Roy Hakala, age 19 of Cromwell and Matthew Maurice Benson, age 20 of Duluth. Both Hakala and Benson were transported to the Carlton County Jail and are being held pending formal charges.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Fond du Lac Tribal Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Cloquet Police Department and the Duluth Police Department.
