Rebels place at state meet

Moose Lake/Willow River Rebel Sam Coil takes third in the shot put with a heave of 50-8 at the Class A Minnesota Track and Field Meet at Hamline University in St. Paul June 10-11.

Two Moose Lake/Willow Rebels earned places on the podium at the Class A Minnesota Track and Field Meet held at Hamline University in St. Paul on Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11.

Junior Sam Coil, who placed fifth last year in the shot put, improved to third this year with a heave of 50-8 on his next to last throw. Coil had come into the meet with a personal best of 51-00.50 that earned him first place at the Minnesota State Class A True Team Meet on May 21. The winning throw was 59-0.

Rebel Ethan Olson placed sixth with a time of 9:53.24 in the 3,200 meter run at the state meet June 10-11.

Sophomore Ethan Olson, competing in his first state meet and coming in with his school-record of 10:08.51 set on May 13 in the 3,200 meter run, worked to get under the 10-minute mark. Olson's effort of 9:53.24 in the eight-lapper paid off to earn him sixth place. The winning time was 9:40.43. Olson came to the state meet with his school-record time of 4:32.74 in the 1,600 meter run set as he won that race at the Section 7AA meet on June 2. Olson's time of 4:40.78 placed him 15th in the four-lapper. The winning time was 4:22.22.

Freshman Kennedy Bryant, in her third appearance at the state meet, was just two places away from the podium in the long jump. Bryant placed 11th at 15-10½. Bryant's season's best of 16-2 was at the Crosby-Ironton Meet on April 15 and was a tie for the second best in the Northland. A leap of 17-11 won the event.
