Barnum Bombers advance

Barnum Bomber Chris Carlson dives back to first before the throw from the pitcher.

The Barnum Bombers baseball team headed into the Section 5A East competition as a fourth ranked team.

The Bombers hosted the East Central Eagles to enter into the double elimination division of the tournament. The Bombers came away from the game with a 12-1 win on home turf.

The Bombers then headed south to Hinckley-Finlayson to take on the No. 1 seeded Jaguars. This game proved to be a little harder, but the Bombers kept the game close until a series of errors allowed the Jaguars to take a 4-1 lead. The Jaguars gave the Bombers their first loss in the double elimination tournament.

Next, the Bombers returned to the field in Hinckley to take on the Braham Bombers. Barnum jumped out to the early lead, forcing Braham to come from behind if they wanted to continue in the tournament. Barnum Bomber Richie Parzy was ejected from the game because he was wearing a necklace. Barnum's Hunter Lake got the call to the mound to face Braham. Lake did well on the mound until late in the game when it was clear he was beginning to tire. Barnum then called Chris Carlson to the mound to close out the game. Carlson did well as he shut out Braham, ending the game 4-2 Barnum.

Barnum next headed back to Hinckley to take on the Isle Huskies. The Bombers jumped out to an early lead as their bats seemed unstoppable, taking an 8-1 lead. The Bombers again were plagued by an inning where nothing seemed to go right, racking up error after error. The Bombers regrouped and finally took the 10-8 victory over the Huskies. Bomber Parzy was again ejected, this time for not sliding into home plate, but rather bulldozing the catcher in an attempt to score. The win over the Huskies gave the Bombers the Section 5A East consolation win and advanced them to the Section 5A quarterfinals in Brainerd at Mills Field.

Monday, June 6, the Bombers headed to Brainerd to take on the Braves of Menahga. The Bombers jumped to the early 2-0 lead, but soon the Braves scored and the Bombers' lead dropped to 2-1. Bomber Mason Agurkis was ejected from the game because he ran into the Braves catcher rather than sliding into home plate. The Bombers scored, bringing them closer to victory. The Braves, however, were not easy to defeat as they scored and the Bombers' lead slipped to 3-2. The Braves pitcher then faced Bomber Carlson, walking Carlson, putting him on base. Carlson took a huge lead off of first base, stole second and set up Lake with a nice drive to bring Carlson into home. The Bombers ended the night taking the 4-3 victory.

The Bombers were scheduled to head back to Mills Field on Tuesday, June 7, to take on the Wolves of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley in the semifinals of Section 5A, with the winner of this game taking on the Jaguars of Hinckley-Finlayson June 9 in Brainerd.
