Newmans named Spring Fever Days grand marshals

34th Annual Barnum Spring Fever Days June 9-12

Evelyn and James Newman are this year's Barnum Spring Fever Days grand marshals.

James and Evelyn Newman have been chosen as grand marshals of Barnum Spring Fever Days 2016.

Both James and Evelyn are graduates of Barnum High School in the years of 1954 and 1955 and proud residents of the community their whole lives.

Jim and Evelyn were owners of Jim's Inn Restaurant and Bar in the 1950s located by the Carlton County Fairgrounds. Jim was involved with small farming, real estate sales and a small business of lawn care. He was a proud school board member for 15 years and served on the Skelton Township Board for even more years.

Evelyn enjoyed her life being involved with children - doing daycare, providing endless hours being a room mother for her kids in school, Carlton County 4-H program, Girl Scouts, Home extension, and Barnum Music Boosters.

Favorite memories of the community are spending a whole day in Barnum in the 1940s and 1950s shopping at the small stores, attending state basketball tournaments, watching the battle of the "Little Brown Jug" between Moose Lake and Barnum.

Both are very involved in the Barnum Area Community Church. They have four children and 11 grandchildren. They rarely miss events of the grandkids - watching them excel in sports, Miss Barnum pageants and Dairy Princess contests.

When asked about their first thoughts of being named grand marshals, they said, "Very honored, very proud - this is a good town."
