MLWR dominates in Deer River

The Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels softball team swept three games to win the Deer River Tournament on Friday, April 29.

The Moose Lake/Willow River softball team dominated by sweeping all three games in five innings to earn the championship at the Deer River Tournament on Friday, April 29. With a 16-5 win over International Falls, a 13-1 win over Greenway and a 16-1 win over Mesabi East, the Rebels out-scored the three opponents by a total of 45-7.

Ally Bode struck out 18 while allowing 18 hits, but she only walked two and ended up with just four earned runs in 14 innings of work.

The Rebels top batting statistical leaders went a combined 32-for-47 (.681) in the three games, including three doubles, two triples and two home runs.

Bode was a combined 9-for-11 at the plate with 12 RBIs and she had a double, two triples and one home run and she scored nine runs. Josie Benzie was 6-for-12 with five RBIs and she scored four runs. Jamie Benzie reached base in 10 out of 12 plate appearances and she had three RBIs and scored four runs. Sage Gerard had a double, a home run and four RBIs. Lauren Pederson was 2-for-4 in the second game with a RBI and a run scored and she was 3-for-4 in the final game with a double, a RBI and two runs scored. Suzy Grutkoski was 3-for-4 in the second game with three runs scored and she scored three runs in the last game.

The 7-2 red hot Rebels, on a five-game winning streak, could be tested by a statistically strong Two Harbors team on Thursday, May 5, in Willow River at 4:30 p.m.

After four days of rest MLWR will be very busy with four games in as many days. Following a long road to trip Grand Marais on Tuesday, May 10, MLWR hosts three in a row in Willlow River, including a schedule change game with the Proctor Rails on Wednesday, May 11, with an early 4 p.m. start, the McGregor Mercuries on Thursday, May 12 and the Virginia Blue Devils on Friday, May 13, with the last two games having regular 4:30 p.m. starts.
