Man faces charge of soliciting child

A Sandstone man is facing a felony charge of soliciting a child through electronic communication to engage in sexual conduct following an undercover operation in Hinckley.

Darrel David Klar, 52, was charged in March with the offense.

According to the charging document, on March 8 the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) set up the undercover operation by placing a personal ad on an Internet site that is geared toward gay and bisexual men.

The BCA agent told Klar he was a 14-year-old male and Klar agreed to meet for sexual conduct at West Side Park in Hinckley, the charging document said. They agreed to meet in the bathroom area. Once Klar was in the area, he was arrested.

The charging document said that Klar admitted he was meeting the juvenile for sex, and acknowledged knowing the person was 14 years old. After the interview, Klar wrote a letter of apology to the mother of the undercover 14-year-old juvenile.

During the interview, Klar told BCA agents everyone lies about their age on the Internet site he was on. He also agreed that he asked the undercover agent who was acting in the capacity of a 14-year-old if he was involved with law enforcement, since Klar did not want to get in trouble with the law.

In 2006, Klar was convicted of second degree criminal sexual conduct. He was also convicted of first degree criminal sexual conduct in 1990. He is currently on probation for the sexual conduct charge from the most recent case. In that case, he was sentenced to serve 33 months in prison, but the sentence was stayed for 25 years, and he was to be on supervised probation for that same period of time.
