Man wanted for brutal assault

One man is in custody and another remains at large after a very serious assault on January 16 in Cloquet.

Craig Andre Askew, 24, was charged with first-degree assault in court in Carlton County on Tuesday, February 16. Patrick Charles Lussier, 28, is wanted for the same charges but remains at large.

According to the criminal complaint, Cloquet police officers responded to an apartment on Arch Street just after midnight on January 16 regarding a serious assault. After they arrived, they were advised that a 29-year-old Cloquet man had been badly assaulted by two men. The victim sustained serious head injuries as well as bad cuts to his hand. One of his fingers had been cut off. Medical personnel were called to attend to the victim.

Neither the victim nor others on the scene would tell officers who had assaulted the victim because they were afraid of retaliation, the criminal complaint stated. However, the two alleged perpetrators of the assault were identified from a photo lineup.

Warrants were issued for Askew and Lussier on February 11. Askew was already in custody in Blue Earth County facing drug charges.

Carlton County Attorney Thom Pertler was granted his request for $50,000 bail for Askew on February 16 because of the risk to public safety. Askew’s next court appearance is Wednesday, February 24.
