MLA girls superior over Spartans

Jessica Bird, a junior on the Moose Lake Area Rebels girls hockey team, almost scored on this shot off her knees in last Thursday's 4-1 win over Superior. Bird is currently ranked third in the state in scoring.

The Moose Lake Area girls hockey team was superior over the Spartans with a 4-1 win over Superior at Riverside Arena on Thursday, January 14. The Rebels out-shot the Spartans 25-23 with Maddy Gamst getting the win in goal with 22 saves. MLA went 1-3 on the power play while Superior went 0-4. MLA improved to 13-7-1 while Superior went to 7-8.

Jessica Paull got the first Rebels goal with Jessica Bird getting the assist on the power play at 6:18. Superior was able to get an even strength assisted goal for 1-1 at 11:46. Lauren Pederson and Ruby Mohelsky combined on an even strength goal at 14:08 for 2-1. Asia Gobel, Sage Gerard and Jessica Bird clicked for an even strength goal for 3-1 at 15:38.

There was no scoring in the second period.

MLA capped it off with Jamie Bird scoring an empty net goal at 16:11 with an assist going to Mohelsky.

The Rebels host Proctor/Hermantown on Thursday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Arena in Moose Lake. The regular season closes out with a home game against Hibbing-Chisholm on Tuesday, January 26, at Riverside Arena at 7:30 p.m. Section 7A playoffs begin at the higher seed on Thursday, February 4.
