Library receives Books for Children grant

Steven Devine-Jelinski

Moose Lake Public Library recently received 94 books for children and young adults.

The Moose Lake Public Library received a "Books for Children" grant from the Pilcrow Foundation in May.

The "Books for Children" grant is a two-to-one matching grant and Members Cooperative Credit Union's (formerly Lake State Credit Union) Community Improvement Foundation was the sponsor of $400. The library received 72 books for a total of $1,202.85, with an additional $404.56 worth of math and science books donated by Hal Berenson and his wife, Laura Ackerman. Berenson, a VP of Relational Database Services at Amazon Web Services and formerly of Microsoft Corporation, has been donating these types of books for many years to these types of foundations.

In total, the Moose Lake Public Library received 94 books for children and young adults totaling $1,607.41.

The Pilcrow Foundation, founded in 2013, gives priority to applications from rural libraries based on the library's financial need, population of the community, its proximity to urban communities, the number of children who visit and check out books and the activities the library provides to the children they serve. Funds are earmarked for purchasing books for young readers.

"Our library has always been at the center of this community, especially to our children. Literacy is one of the greatest gifts that we can give to our children, the library is a great place to start that. We are extremely pleased with this grant. We want to thank Lake State for their help. It's wonderful when a community can team up together for a great cause. With a small library like ours and a small budget for purchasing materials, this grant was a welcomed addition to our collection. We were able to fill some gaps in our collection in the children and young adult areas. I also want to give a big thank you to the great staff at the library for helping to select and process all those books, and all you do for the patrons every day," said Moose Lake Public Library Director Steve Devine-Jelinski.

The library celebrated the grant November 7 with several children and teens in attendance to check out the books. The ceremony was followed by a library program. A book plate has been placed in each of the books stating they were donated by the Pilcrow Foundation, Lake State Credit Union, and Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman. A full list will be available at the library.
