Rebels vanquish Vikings in shut-out game

The Moose Lake Willow River Rebels vanquished the Cook County Vikings with a 8-0 shut-out in Willow River on Tuesday, May 5. Sophomore Ally Bode, one of the strikeout leaders in the Northland, added 10 K to her stats to bring her to a total of 176. Bode, with a 1.20 ERA, walked just three to bring that total to only 31 on the season. MLWR improved to 11-4 while Cook County went to 4-8.

The Rebels out-hit the Viking 11-3 and had two errors as compared to five errors for Cook County. Suzy Grutkoski had two singles and an RBI. Bode, who leads the team in batting at .543, had two singles. Josie Benzie had a RBI triple. Jessica Paull had a two-RBI single. The Rebels struck out only three times in the game.

Grutkoski led off by popping up an infield single that fell between the mound and first. Lefty Body ripped a single through the right side for runners on the corners. With Jessica Paull at the plate, a wild pitch made it runners on second and third. Paull lined to short and Grutkoski really had to hustle and knocked the ball free as she dove back for the bag. Morgan Prachar grounded to first and Laura Walker fanned as the Rebels stranded two in scoring position.

The Vikings' lead off rolled unassisted to first. A seeing-eye single dropped into shallow right field. Bode fanned two.

Merissa Mikrot was hit by pitch and advanced on a wild pitch to Jamie Benize who followed with a perfect bunt down the first base line. Nicole Newham walked to load the bases for Josie Benzie. A wild pitch allowed Mikrot to score for 1-0. Grutkoski's pop fly became an error for 2-0. Bode walked. Paull singled through the right side for two RBIs and 4-0. Prachar popped to second. Walker lined a single up the middle for 5-0. Mikrot got an infield single to reload the bases, but Jamie Benzie rapped back to pitcher to strand three.

The Vikings rolled through the top of the third with an unassisted put at first, a tap back to Bode and a rap back to Bode.

Newham rolled out to first. Josie Benzie popped to second. Grutkoski reached on an error at short. Bode singled and error in right allowed a run for 6-0. Paull walked. Prachar legged out an infield single and Marissa Stevens came in to run. Walker lined to third.

The Vikings got their third hit with a single into left. A rap back to Bode was a nice play as she got the lead runner. Bode fanned one a strikeout got away from Prachar but Bode came right back and struck out the next to bring her K count to six.

Marissa Stevens lined out to second. Gabby Bennett rapped back to the pitcher. Newham's hard-hit single was a two-base error. Josie Benzie hammered an RBI triple for 7-0. Grutkoski's second single was an RBI for 8-0. Bode lined to right.

Bode struck out another. On a grounder to short, Newham did all she could to stretch but it was called a pulled foot off the bag for an error. Bode got one swinging and one watching to make it nine strikeouts.

Paull grounded to short and Prachar grounded to second. Walker got hit in the throat by a foul off her bat and Jamie Benzie took over but grounded to second.

Bode walked her second, but a pop went to second, a grounder was netted by Bode and a grounder was taken care of at second.

Stevens was caught looking and so was Bennett. Newham reached on an error at second but was thrown out attempting to steal.

A grounder went to first. Bode walked her third. An error at third made it runners on second and third. Bode notched K10. A hard grounder required a good play by Josie Benzie to close it out.
