Close game ends hockey season

A traditional fan salute takes place after the game February 17 for the Moose Lake Area Rebels varsity hockey team.

The first round of Section 5A high school hockey had the Moose Lake Area (MLA) Rebels boys hockey team traveling down to Pine City February 17 to take on the Dragons. The young Rebels continue on the road of rebuilding, with the last three regular season records of 2012-13: 0-25, 2013-14: 5-18, 2014-15: 8-17. The Rebels lost to Pine City twice during the regular season by only one point each time - the 3-2 loss on January 30 coming in overtime. A nice group of fans came to support the Rebels.

The first period started with the Dragons scoring at 2:17. A little over 12 minutes later, senior Teddy Ryan scored for the Rebels at 14:35, tying the game. The Dragons came back late in the period to take a 2-1 lead at 15:31 to end the period.

The second period the Rebels came out strong with a goal at 5:27 from junior Devin Murphy and another goal, a power play at 9:14, from sophomore Bryceton Butkiewicz assisted by sophomore Wyatt Lampel. The Rebels had the 3-2 lead until 14:04 when the Dragons scored, tying it up again. Thirty-six seconds later at 14:40 Butkiewicz scored giving the 4-3 lead back to the Rebels. Late in the second at 16:11 the Dragons scored ending the period in a 4-4 tie.

Period three saw the Rebels in the penalty box with four unanswered goals at 2:46, 6:45 power play, 9:57 power play and 13:35 power play, leaving the Rebels down 4-8. At 15:24 Ryan scored on a Rebels power play with assists from Granfors and junior Hunter Lake. A score of 8-5 is as close as the Rebels could climb back as the game ended.

The Rebels look forward to building more next season. Moose Lake Area Hockey sends a big thank you to the three seniors - captain Jesse Granfors, captain Asa Spicer and Teddy Ryan - for the time put in to Rebels hockey through the years and wishes them luck in their future plans.
