Several of the freezers and one small refrigerator could be replaced by commercial refrigeration with grant funds.

Starting December 2, people may vote once a day to help the Moose Lake Area Food Shelf win a $20,000 infrastructure grant, said Roseanne Pliml, the food shelf director, in a recent interview.

The Moose Lake Area Food Shelf is one of 150 finalists from throughout the nation in the Walmart Food Pantry Holiday Makeover Campaign. Out of those 150, 75 food shelves that receive the most online votes will be awarded the grants.

The Moose Lake Area Food Shelf serves over 300 families in southern Carlton and northern Pine counties. Donations from local churches, businesses, organizations and individuals are used by food shelf volunteers to provide food and other needed items for their clients.

If the Moose Lake food shelf is one that receives a high vote count and is awarded the grant, the funds will be used to replace the numerous freezers and small refrigerator with commercial refrigerators and freezers, a bathroom sink and heat for the waiting area, said Pliml.

"Right now, we have quite a few freezers and one small refrigerator for eggs," said Pliml. "With more refrigeration space we can have fresh fruit and vegetables to give our clients. We can provide healthier foods in addition to the frozen and canned foods that we provide now.

"We had 51 clients last week. That's a lot of food. If you walk in this space, you walk out with food, no matter where you are from."

People may vote once a day by going to the website http://www.walmart.com/holidaymakeover. A Facebook account is needed to vote.

"It's really exciting," said Pliml. "It's really, really exciting."

Votes will be taken until December 12. The winners of the grants will be announced on December 15.
