Open since 2007, the Moose Lake ALCO store is among the 198 stores to close. The company filed for bankruptcy last month.

With 198 stores in 23 states and after 113 years in business, ALCO has announced it will close all its stores, including the one in Moose Lake.

Signs announcing the store's closing were placed in and near the store last Friday. Staff from a liquidation company was also at the store Friday, marking down merchandise.

Following the announcement, community members have expressed sadness after learning the store will close.

"We are sad, too," said store manager David Loose. "I've been here a year, and this store was one of the better stores in the corporation."

The ALCO store opened in Moose Lake in November 2007, and was welcomed by the community. Sales figures were higher than in some of the other 197 ALCO stores in the nation.

The Moose Lake store has 19 employees.

Loose explained the store's performance isn't why it is closing, it is the corporation that has filed bankruptcy. All of the ALCO stores will be closed.

In Minnesota, those include stores in Caledonia, Long Prairie, Mahnomen, Moose Lake, New Prague, Olivia, Paynesville, Pine River, Spring Valley, Warroad and Zumbrota. For a complete listing of all locations, visit http://www.alcostores.com/locations.html.

Loose said the ALCO store will be open through January 31, 2015.

Rumors are circulating that another chain will purchase the store, but Loose said there is no factual basis to the rumors.
