Cross country continues improvement

Savannah Gamst (left) and Sarah Michels compete in the Swain Cross Country Meet at Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth October 4.

Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth was the site of the Swain Cross Country Meet October 4 for the Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum cross country team.

In past meets at this location, the weather was not that nice for running. Two years ago, it was cold with snow flurries, last year it was raining, and this year, the weather was cold, wet, muddy and very windy. Numerous runners were seen slipping, sliding and falling only to come up covered in mud. By the last race, it was clear where the runners had been. Even with these conditions, runners seventh grade through varsity level did their best and had fun.

Looking back at recent years and how the Rebels varsity team has done at Swain has shown them on a constant improvement. The Rebels girls placed 20th two years ago and 19th last year. They once again improved by placing 16th.

The Rebels boys have also shown similar improvement at Swain. For the boys, it was 23rd place two years ago, with a big jump to 12th last year and an 11th place finish this year. This improvement comes from the time and dedication that all the runners put in at practice, along with proper training techniques given them by coach Adam Whelan and assistant coach Sarah Thompson.

Next stop for the Rebels cross country team is the Polar League Conference Championship in Grand Marais on October 8 then in Proctor on October 14 and the Section 7A championships October 23 in Cloquet.
