Wanted man, missing children located

Peter Kunze

On September 12, the Pine County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension issued a "missing persons alert," asking the public's assistance in locating Peter John Kunze, age 44, and his two children, Sean Emily Hanson, 16, and Joshua Alexander, 12.

Kunze failed to appear or make his two children available during a child custody hearing in Pine County District Court scheduled on that date. At the hearing it was determined that Kunze's two juvenile children were to be placed in the custody of Pine County Health and Human Services.

After the hearing, Pine County deputies and Pine County Health and Human Services attempted to locate Kunze and the children at their home. It was determined Kunze, his two juvenile children and his two adult children had left their home with the family dogs, in the family's vehicle.

Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued for Kunze, for two counts of deprive of custody rights.

On September 23, around midnight, the Kunze vehicle was stopped in southern Kansas for a minor traffic violation and routine checks revealed the outstanding arrest warrant.

Kunze was taken into custody without incident. The children were in the vehicle and stated they thought they were on a family vacation.

Pine County Health and Human Services is working with the state of Kansas to return the juvenile children to Pine County. Kunze is awaiting extradition.
