MLA girls win two on the road

The Moose Lake Area Rebels girls hockey team shot past the Blizzard 5-3 at Grantsburg, Wisconsin, on January 4. The Rebels out-shot the Blizzard 38-23 in the game with Cassie White stopping 20 shots and getting the win in goal for MLA. Jessica Bird and Andrea Youngberg each had a three-point night for the Rebels.

It was Cheyanne Wilson scoring first, on an assist by Karina Cisar, for 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. The Rebels went up 2-0 at 8:54 as Kiersten Evenson scored on an assist by Josie Benzie. The Rebels made it 3-0 at 9:50 as Andrea Youngberg scored on an assist by Jessica Bird.

The Blizzard made a comeback to close to within 3-2 as they scored the only goals in the second period.

Jessica Bird scored a short-handed goal, assisted by Youngberg and Jessica Paul, for 4-2 at 4:06 of the third frame. The Blizzard closed back to within a goal at 10:48. The Rebels capped off the scoring at 16:04 with a goal by Jessica Bird and assists to Asia Gobel and Youngberg.

The Rebels really poured it on to beat Superior 7-2 at the Superior Ice Arena on Tuesday, January 14. MLA out-shot the opponents 33-16 in the game with Maddy Gamst getting the win in goal as she had 14 saves. Andrea Youngberg and Jessica Bird both had three-point nights for MLA.

It was Youngberg scoring first, on a short-handed goal, assisted by Jessica Paull at 6:35. Jessica Bird was the next to light the lamp as she scored at 8:28, assisted by Kiersten Evenson. Superior got a goal at 11:04. The Rebels fired right back as Karina Cisar got an unassisted goal at 13:45 for 3-1, MLA.

Asia Gobel got the first goal of the second period as she scored at 5:02, assisted by Mackenzie Louzek and Jamie Bird. Karina Cisar made it 5-1 at 6:22 as she was assisted by Haley Radel.

The Spartans got a goal in the early going of period three as they scored at 0:49. The Rebels soon answered as Jessica Bird scored, assisted by Asia Gobel and Andrea Youngberg for 6-2. The Rebels closed out the scoring at 10:47 as Youngberg scored short-handed, assisted by Jessica Bird and Jamie Bird for the 7-2 win.

With the win, the Lady Rebels went 8-1-1 over their 10 previous games before two games in Eveleth last weekend, one of which they lost to Owatonna and a win over Spring Lake Park, both AA schools.
