MLA gets first win of season

Additional information by Tim Franklin

It has been a long 22 months for the Moose Lake Area Rebels boys hockey team.

After a winless 2012-13 season, the Rebels have shown great improvement this season and had taken one opponent to the wire earlier this season, before falling in overtime.

But on Saturday, December 28, the Rebels finally did it. They won their first game of the season with a 6-4 win over Ely. It was the Rebels' first win since February 21, 2012, which was 35 games, including the forfiet in the playoffs last year.

The Rebels had a season-high 49 shots on goal, while senior goalie Gage Mohelsky stopped 30 of 34 shots.

Ninth grader Bryce Butkiewicz had a hat trick for the Rebels (1-8) and sophomore Richie Parzy had a goal and three assists for a four point outing.

It was Jordan Drewlo scoring first, on assists from Richie Parzy and Butkiewicz, at 6:56 of the first period. Parzy then got an unassisted goal at 12:07 to make the score 2-0. Ely came back with a late first period goal and one in the second to make the score 2-2, before Butkiewicz’s first goal at 15:40 of the second period that was assisted by Asa Spicer. After two periods, the Rebels held their own, and were ahead 3-2.

It would take toughness, determination and strength to finally win, with Ely having nine more skaters on their bench than the Rebels.

The Rebels went ahead 4-2 with a goal by Butkiewicz at 2:51 with an assist by Parzy. Alex Erickson scored what would become the game-winner (or should we say 35-game losing streak breaker) at 9:27, with assist by Spicer.

Ely made it 5-3 with a goal at 11:03, but Butkiewicz completed his hat trick at 14:37 with an assist by Parzy. Ely scored just eight seconds later but the important thing is the Rebels had their "W."

Looking at the schedule, the Rebels boys have several more good opportunities for more wins this year, including two more games against Ely.

They face Northern Lakes at home this Thursday, January 9 against Northern Lakes (7-5).
