Man charged with taking funds from deceased father

Douglas Charles Dorn, 44, of East Gull Lake has been charged with one count of Theft, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years or a $20,000 fine.

According to the written complaint, Moose Lake police officers have been investigating a call received on April 8 from a First National Bank employee regarding a deceased person’s account receiving Social Security benefits and withdrawal debit card transactions.

The deceased is John Charles Dorn, who died on December 5, 2012, in New Mexico. Dorn’s son, Douglas Charles Dorn, retrieved his father’s belongings, including his checkbook and financial papers, on December 23, 2012, according to a witness. Several checks from the deceased’s account were drafted to the defendant and deposited into his account after Dorn’s death.

Law enforcement personnel identified the defendant through cross checking his Driver and Vehicle Services photo. The amount taken from the deceased’s account is near $5,000.

The complaint was dated September 26, 2013.
